Obituary for Kathryn (Mattos) Ornellas

Kathryn V. Ornellas

Kathryn V. (Mattos) Ornellas, 99 years young, a lifetime resident of Armona, passed Sunday, August 14th after a period of failing health.

Born and raised in Armona, Kathryn was the daughter of the late Joe Enos Mattos and Veronica (Luis) Mattos and the granddaughter of Kings County pioneer, Antonio Luis.

Kathryn began attending Armona Elementary School at age 4 and graduated from Hanford Union High in 1940 at age 16. She then went to work as office secretary for Armona Cannery.

Later was employed as office bookkeeper & manager for Grace & Cecil Friend of Lemoore. In 1960, Kathryn started her 27-year career with Armona Union Elementary School District where she retired as the District Executive Secretary in 1987.

She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for over 70 years.

In May of 1947 Kathryn married Joe F. Ornellas who in 1985 retired from the Kings County Sheriff Office and after 43 of marriage passed in 1990.

She is survived by her children, Rodney Ornellas and his wife Vicki, Wayne Ornellas and his wife Helen. Kathryn was blessed with five grandchildren: Michael Ornellas and his wife Kellen, Aymee Henning and her husband Daniel, Aaron Ornellas and his wife Chloe, Joshua Ornellas and his wife Kylie, Megan Ornellas and her boyfriend Erik Rodrigues. Kathryn received special blessings in her six great-grandchildren: Kyra Ornellas, Cooper Ornellas, Caylee Ornellas, Katelyn Henning, Kinsley Ornellas, and preceding her in death, Lucas Ornellas. Kathryn is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Mary Brown, Veronica Ornellas, Emily Brown, and Joe Mattos, Jr.

Family and friends are invited to attend:

Visitation at Phipps-Dale Funeral Chapel, Lemoore, on Sunday, August 28th 5-6:30 pm
Family Rosary 6:30-7:00 pm.
Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Mary of Heart Catholic Church, Hanford, Ca., Monday, August 29th at 10:00 am.
Internment at Grangeville Cemetery in Armona.
