Arlene Santino, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 12, 2020 after a short stay in Adventist Hospital in Hanford. She was born in Santa Paula, California on December 16, 1943 to Neoma Summers of Texas and James Howard Rozzell of Oklahoma. Arlene grew up in Fillmore, California and graduated from Fillmore High School in 1961. The family moved to Tulare, California in the mid-60s where she met Joseph Santino, Jr. who was stationed at Naval Air Station, Lemoore. They were married on December 16, 1966. The family moved to Avenal in 1970 where she and Joseph raised their two sons, Joseph and David. They lived there until their deaths.

Arlene was very active in Avenal. She was a member of the local chapter of the Native Daughters of the Golden West until the chapter dissolved in the mid 1980s. She and Joseph began covering Avenal news for the Coalinga Record beginning in 1982, eventually working her way in to the position of Editor of the Avenal Progress. Arlene and Joseph worked there until the paper ceased operation in 2007. After being retired from the newspaper business, Arlene began volunteering in the community. She served on the City Recreation Committee, she was a member of the Avenal Historical Society and had served on the Avenal Old Timer’s Committee. She volunteered many hours at the Avenal Senior Nutrition Center and was involved with the Senior Club. Arlene was also the city’s representative on the Kings County Commission on Aging since 2010.

Arlene was a recipient of the Milton O. Wilen Award for community service in 2007 and named Avenal’s Favorite Daughter in 2016.

Arlene was preceded in death by her mother and father, stepfather Joe A. Summers, husband Joseph Santino Jr., brother James Doyle Rozzell and a niece, Dina Rozzell. She is survived by a brother R.C. Rozzell of Tibiao, Antique, Philippines, two sons, Joseph of Coalinga and David of Modesto, Daughter-in-Law Heidi of Salida, Granddaughters Sarah Santino of Coalinga, Lauren Santino and Jessica Santino of Salida, Nephews Daniel Rozzell of Visalia, Christopher Rozzell of Lemoore, Scott Rozzell of Visalia, and James Rozzell, Kenny Rozzell and Joe Rozzell all of Oregon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m Tuesday, January 21 at the First Southern Baptist Church, 297 Washington St. in Coalinga. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Coalinga.
